Empire 698 - cartridge help

I bought a new cartridge - an Ortofon 2M Bronze, intending to install it on my Empire 698, but I've hit a roadblock. The headshell seems to accept only unthreaded cartridges and the ortofon is threaded and is meant to mount with the screws threaded from above the headshell into the cartridge threads. But the Empire has a plastic finger lift glued to the top of the headshell blocking access from the top of the headshell - seemingly negating the installation of any cartridge with threaded mounting holes.

Am I condemned to only using cartridges that can be mounted from the bottom of the cartridge up into the headshell? If so I am thoroughly disappointed.

Anybody out there able to help me with this?
