Greetings- To make a long story longer, I had to change a dashpot on an SME 3009 II as the one that came on the arm could not be fixed by me. (or SME anymore either). This particular type of dashpot (without the elongated hole) can't be "bled" like the improved version can apparently. Anyways, because the new dashpot has the armlift rest as part of the mechanism, I needed to remove the "plastic" rest from the armtube as it was no longer needed. I suppose that I could have just cut it off with an Exacto knife, but I thought that this was a good opportunity to replace the bearing with one of the bronze bearings sold on Ebay.I opted for the Taiwanese version which only cost $32.00. The changing of the bearing is supposed to be a fairly straight forward process, however, one of the two screws that hold the bearing in place ,also screws into a tiny plate inside the armtube where the ground wire is soldered. The tiny threaded "plate" is not secured to anything except the screw that holds the bearing in place. I had to remove the counterweight to gain access to the end of the tube in order to hold the tiny plate ( with hemostats) so that I could screw in the second bearing screw. Clear as mud, right? The point that I'm trying to make is that this would have been a relatively simple bearing swap except for that "free foating" tiny threaded plate. Also, if you are considering buying a used SME arm, be sure to ask if the cueing drops nice and slow, to avoid the headaches that I went through. Now, my question is, while I nearly have this entire arm dismantled, is it difficult to remove the headshell plug-in connection to gain acess to the other end of the tonearms wires? I'm considering an inexpensive Cardas upgrade wire. I've enclosed a picture of the area in question, are you supposed to depress the tab located in the middle of the oval cutout (bottom of tube)to release the headshell plug, or is there something else needed? Thanks very much for your assistance. Regards, wpod
