Harmonic distorsion on vinyl?

Is it mainly 2nd harmonic distorsion that we're hearing on LP's, or is it 3rd harmonic? And what is the main source of this distorsion?

I read an interesting theory about the secrets of the SET-amps "clean" sound. The theory was that the high amount of 2nd harmonic distorsion could actually cancel out the high amount of 2nd harmonic distorsion in the speakers (!) or at least partially so. No measurements were referred to, though.

From a musical stanpoint, it's easy to understand why 2nd harmonic distorsion is much more harmless than other harmonics, of course. But maybe there's more to it?
