In Reply to: Does 70's/80's music sound better on vinyl than CD? posted by T NUC on August 18, 2007 at 14:15:05:
Yes, I find that most albums from this period sounds better on vinyl. An important factor is the deterioration of the original tapes, though. Somewhere in the 70's, a new kind of tapes were introduced. These tapes had lower noise and better specs than anything before, but these tapes seemed to deteriorate much faster than the earlier types. So if an album was transferred to disk in the 70's, the tape would likely be in much worse condition for the CD-transfer in the 80's or later. The solution is tape "baking" and re-mastering, using EQ to make it listenable again. Sometimes though (pretty often, actually), record companies release old albums on CD with very little care to these things. I have CD's with so much wow & flutter, they are a pain to listen to. A very good reason to get the original vinyl issues instead.
