Harmful tonearms?

Considering how popular older turntable designs are today (idler-drive Duals, Lencos, AR et c), I wonder if their original designs could be bad for the records. Of course, there are much better tonearms available today, but if I want to keep the table in it's stock condition, should I worry about record wear?

I'm about to restore my grandfather's L75, with new vertical bearings and a new EJ stylus for the original Shure M75 cart. It's an elliptical that tracks between 1.5 and 3 g. There's of course the ED stylus which tracks between 0.75 and 1.5, but I choose this replacement simply because the mass of the tonearm is on the high side. Also, the decoupled counterweight seems to induce yet another resonance of unknown frequency, that could impair tracking ability. However, it sounds so great that I will probably let my AR rest for some time, now. Again, should I worry about excessive record wear?
