That's a good one ;-)It's really impossible to tell if a scratch will degrade the sound of a record, merely by looking at it. Unless it has wiped away the original grooves, of course. It depends on how deep the stylus rides in the groove. If the scratch is deep enough, the audible effect also depends on the whole amplifier system, as well as the stylus shape.
If there are visible scratches on a record, I want a guarantee from the salesperson that they are not affecting the sound, if I were paying any kind of money for it. I get angry when I see scratched records selling at "mint condition"-prices, when it's obvious that the seller hasn't examined the records at all.
