I'm some of our Blue Note fiends will chime in but here's my two cents: I've got a half dozen original deep groove, Lexinton Ave, ear, etc.. and the piano is a bit muffled on all of them.If you make a comparison to a classical music recording of the same era the difference in the piano "brightness" is quite evident. I would guess that for whatever reason, this is what they chose to do.
However, they still sound great.
