It would be interesting to find out if there were a mid-production change. That would explain your experience with the repaired AC-1.
The AC-2 and AC-3 are still very very VTA critical as was the AC-1, so the suspension difference was not significant from that standpoint.My AC-2 has a re-tip performed by the Garrott Brothers before their eventual sucide. It still sports the original sapphire cantilever tube and sounds as it should.
The AC-3 I have is totally original NOS and it has maybe 20 hours on it. The suspension is barely broken in, but it impressed me by its sheer musicality and absolute "rightness" in the high frequencies right from the start.
I didn't know that Accuphase made a separate phono pre-amp.
I did use the head amp for a time way back when, but the phono stage was a PSE.When I get home from my travels I will have to do some digging in my old audio rags to see if there is any mention of an update.
