Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

Yes, I meant as a design parameter.

What would a tonearm designer pick as the first design parameter? Wouldn't it logical for it to be the null points, IE linear offset? That is assuming it was not dictated by something so pragmatic as the need to fit in an existing hole? But even assuming that the linear offset still dictates the rest that is unless he is designing to use a broad range of popular null point pairs, IE linear offsets.

The SME product line over the years has used no less than 5 different linear offsets.

Obviously if one knows the offset angle AND the effective length the linear offset is known as it is fixed and for each combination unique.

If you read the whole thread you will recall Brian knew only the effective length of his DIY tonearm and could not correctly align it. Without knowing the targeted linear offset he would not be able to calculate the other parameters. And there are several to choose from.

Cheers!
