namely his "B" version has lower distortion over a long sustained period at the sacrifice of short periods of high distortion at the beginning and the end of the record. The idea being at the beginning it is not critical since the "density" is lower due to the higher speed of the grooves past the stylus and at the end, well he thought there would be very little information there anyway. he may or may not be correct it depends on the particular LP. Also the short periods of relative high distortion are less irritable than the long period of time at the relatively higher levels of the "A" version, aka Baerwald.If you look at the Stevenson and Loefgren "A" curves they are almost identical with the difference being the Stevenson is shifted towards the spindle 6mm. Again the increase with the Stevenson curve is at the beginning of the LP where there is much less negative effect due to the tracking error. However at the end of the LP, less than 70mm, the Stevenson curve is in a mode of DECREASING distortion whereas the Loefgren "A" is in a mode of rapidly INCREASING distortion. In both cases there is only one point of zero distortion and although as you calculated the average for Loefgren "A" is 25% lower than Stevenson it is nevertheless a question of the particular LP.
From approximately 70mm outwards I hear very little if any difference between all three but in the cases where an LP has recorded grooves inside of 65mm Stevenson does sound "cleaner" and since this is the part of the LP that is the real "torture tracks" it makes sense.
Frankly I could live with any of the three.
