Hi - finding this thread (and a similar one a few days ago) very informative. I have been trying to digest John Elison's alignment calculator spreadsheet with some limited success, but would appreciate some help with a few questions.Firstly - is overhang solely dependant on the difference between mounting distance and effective length? If so, which is the best to finetune overhang?
I have built a second DIY tonearm a la Schroeder (Model 1), but unfortunately have never had (and probably never will) get the opportunity to see the real thing. My "Mark I" arm had a slotted headshell which allowed some twist and translation of the cartidge to achieve alignment.
"Mark II" is more like the Schroeder, with a single screw holding a cartridge mounting plate.
On this arm, I can alter mounting distance (at the moment) and offset (and VTA, azimuth). I assumed that with those variables I would be able to achieve most alignments. In practice I can get close to Baerwald, but not dead on. Adjusting mounting distance (pushing the mounting board around the plinth) is pretty imprecise. Do I need (or would I be better) to slot the arm wand so that I can vary the longitudinal position of the cartridge mounting plate? Of course this will likely have other ramifications regarding strength/stiffness of the arm, so I dont want to do it unnecessarily.
Any thoughts, coments appreciated
Cheers
Brian
