Re: SME 3009 measurement question (picture)

It would be helpful if you could measure the effective length, the distance from the pivot to the stylus.

I looked in the Vinyl Engine database and I couldn't find a SME tonearm with a mounting distance of 8.93-inches (226.7-mm). There is one, a 310-R with a mounting distance of 222-mm (8.74-inches).

If I were you, I would download a Stevenson alignment protractor and a Baerwald alignment protractor from the Vinyl Engine. Then I would attempt to adjust the tonearm base for an inner groove alignment at 60-mm using the Stevenson protractor. If you can adjust the base for such an alignment, you should then measure where the outer null-point falls and assess the situation from there.

If the outer null-point seems to be around 117-mm, your tonearm has been designed for Stevenson's alignment and you are good to go. On the other hand, if the outer null-point seems to be around 127-mm, your tonearm is probably designed for Baerwald's alignment and you should go back and readjust the inner null-point to 66-mm using the Baerwald protractor. Then the outer null-point should fall in around 121-mm.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
John Elison
