Don Kirshner formed The Monkeys for the TV show and related record sales. Most of their tunes were penned by career songwriters, not the band. "Believer" and few other hits were written by Neil Diamond. When Peter, Mickey, Mike, and David began demanding a larger role in the group's direction; i.e. writing the songs and playing them in the studio and on tour, DK quit the project and began The Archies, a group of animated characters that would never ask for a raise. Not that I don't like the music but it was a marketing effort from the onset.
