For what it's worth, my MMF-7 came with a Maestro cart which had a similar problem. After a few months something went wacky and it developed a hum in the left channel. After an over-the-phone diagnostic, Roy Hall asked me to send the cart back and replaced it with a new one.However, it was a different model from Goldring and the problem went from zero to toast in a day or so. It wasn't intermittent, as your is, for very long.
