Re: A receiver for my TD-160

There is really no specific reason to go vintage, although receivers have pretty much fallen out of favor with audiophile which means its very difficult to find a decent sounding 2-channel receiver these days. Integrated amps are the way to go today and you will find much more of a selection in every price range compared to 2-channel receivers which generally are all cheap and crappy sounding. The exception are the rare high-end stereo recievers like the one Magnum Dynalab makes which is supposed to be very good sounding albiet at a pretty steep price. The Thorens TD160 is a great table and is as at least as good if not better than most of the entry-mid level tables made today so it deserves decent amplification. It really depends on what you want to spend. If your looking for something on a tight budget you cant beat some of the better vintage receivers and integrated amps from FIsher, Scott, Marantz, Sansui....etc they generally have good phono sections since TT were the main source up until the 90's. But buying vintage your never garunteed you will get a good workking unit and vintage equipment is best if your handy with a soldering iron and can do some minor repairs and upgrades. If you have $500+ you can start looking at the newer entry level high-end integrateds like Creek, NAD, Rotel, Rega...etc just make sure it has a phono section if you dont already have a seperate phono pre-amp. I just got a great deal on a Thorens TD165 and I am in the process of getting it all fixed up and in perfect working order, these old Thorens were very well made and definitly stood the test of time. I am going to be using mine with an older Exposure Xv integrated. Hope this helps.
