Re: Red colored vinyl questions? (semi long)

As pointed out previously, raw vinyl is translucent and is colored with additives. These additives are basically very finely milled minerals.

Black uses carbon. A carbon black additive not only covers up potential faults, it also costs less to use. The colorant itself is cheaper and less of it is used to color the vinyl. The colors use a variety of minerals, some exotic, some toxic. White uses titanium oxide (TiO2) and a lot of it. The next time you spin a white record you can tell everyone that it is titanium. Just like golf balls!

The loading and the type of mineral used certainly has an effect on the wear properties of the vinyl. We would need a polymer chemist to give more detail. If we had two polymer chemists they would probably disagree.
