I'm currently happy with my Hagerman Cornet w/ Lundahl step-ups, which is at a considerably lower price then your budget. But I will undoubtably upgrade to your same price level this year.

From reviews, hearsay, and direct listening, the ones I'm considering are:

- K&K Phono preamp kit (see K&K Audio forum here in the Asylum, I haven't heard it, but there are many happy owners who rave about its grain-free, fluid sound. Most likely awesome for classical.)

- Art Audio Vinyl One (Not only throws the deepest soundstage I've ever heard, but also makes music. Well-recorded jazz is scary good)

- Hagerman Trumpet (Great dynamics, punchy and alive)

The above are all tube units with step-up transformers for low-output MC.
