In a bit of a hurry so an apology if this seems terse:1. Ugly or not, try putting the shelf liner on top of the rubber mat - you may get an idea if improvement will result from VTA change
2. I adjusted the azimuth by placing the stylus on a record and watching the 2 little dashes on either side of the front of the cart to ensure the distance between the dash and reflection of it on the record were equal on both sides. Azimuth checked on both inner and outer groove positions.
3. With regard to your question futher down the thread, I think if there are problems with setup such as azimuth, then yes increasing the VTF can give the impression of covering up those problems.
