I listened to the Chopin cto 1 by Rubinstein on RCA (mono) just the other night. I think the sound is crappy. But to be fair, I'm usually annoyed when the piano is way louder then the orchestra. I mean, it doesn't sound like that in the concert hall, so why do it in the studio? The performance is fine, but when the recording sounds like the pianist and the orchestra are not even playing in the same room, it directly affects my response to the composition itself. It's like viewing a reproduction of a Van Gogh that inaccurately exaggerated the color YELLOW.. changes the feeling of the work.
