I'm not sure which (redbook standard) digital design spec contributes most to the limitations of Redbook standard digital playback. The limited sampling rate appears to have fairly significant impact because higher sampling rates result in improved sound (with all else remaining equal).
Then there is the jitter issue. Redbook digital sound reproduction has improved as we've gained knowledge about the impact of digital timing on musicality and taken steps to improve it.
But my personal favorite for the limitations of the Redbook standard is the 20kHz brickwall frequency limitation. I believe that frequencies above 20kHz, and a smooth roll-off of them, provide something to the music that we haven't yet defined with current engineering or scientific measurement technology or knowledge.
But you already know all of this - were you just inquiring about which commonly discussed issue was my favorite?
