Let’s review....1. Balance the arm so it floats just above the LP. This is zero tracking force. Set the front ring to zero. (The reading on the front ring is useless if you have a Shure gauge so don't be too concerned about it.) This balancing is really only necessary if you don't have a tracking force gauge.
2. Using your Shure gauge, set the tracking force to the recommended setting for your cartridge by turning the counterweight from the rear. The Shure gauge is pretty accurate so once it is set, forget it. Well, almost. Check it once in a while just to be sure you haven't bumped the counterweight and altered the setting.
3. Set the anti-skate in one of the three grooves on the rod.
Now, when you are playing a LP the arm should be approximately parallel to the LP. The arm won't be parallel when you are balancing it as in step one. Remember, it should float just above the LP (zero force) so it probably won't be parallel.
If your arm is not roughly parallel to the LP while playing, you may need to adjust the VTA, or vertical tracking angle. This is an entirely different adjustment from tracking force.
