With even a non-warped record I noticed too much down pressure will cause the outside edge of the LP to warp up and no longer make contact with the platter. With a regular "wave" warp, the clamp helps flatten the inside tracks, but doesn't do much for the outside tracks, where the warp is worse (this is the circumstance where those outer ring clamps would make sense).
The best result with a regular clamp is when you have a (evenly) warped record where you're playing the concave side down - when the outside edge is making contact and the inside isn't - fun to push it flat against the platter.
