In most cartridges it is the cantilever bearing that provides the damping function. Shure had the idea to separate damping and bearing function, so that each can be optimized individually without affecting the other. That idea was introduced with model IV where a separate damping element sits on the rear end of the cantilever. Mass and location are chosen such that it is operational only at high frequencies where it is needed, not at mid and low frequencies, where it is not desired.
