For the wood to absorb the vibration we fist have to get the vibration across the boundary, so I think equalising propagation velocities is important.Australian woods give you a range of choices not available in the old world. Burl Jarrah and Brigalow (AKA axebreaker) have characteristics close to the best ebony but are a tenth the price.
