That's another good question John.I'm not sure I agree that the damping is ever actually in series. I think "cantilever damping" as per the Shure system is in parallel with the compliance because it is actually between the stylus body and the record surface. I have never seen a system where the cantilever itself is actually damped.
If it was in series you'd be right it makes it a whole different ball game because the loss is then between the reactive elements so it alters the phase relationship between them. I think that situation is soluble but it requires some serious maths.
