Many musicians I know have worn out LP copies as they have been picking out the chords and melodies of tunes, and playing the same passages repeatedly many times. From what I've read, the vinyl melts for a very short time as the stylus tracks the groove, but the vinyl becomes softer and more vulnerable for some time afterwards. In my AR XA manual, they recommend to let the record "heal" for around 24 hours between replays. My dad (and his band) wore out his original "Sgt. Pepper" in this way, so the other members bought him a new copy afterwards (which seems to be a less desirable pressing, unfortunately). I always let the records rest for 24h between replays, to be on the safe side.
Cheers,
/Peter

- if you think it's melting, what makes you think that it cools back to the same intricate groove pattern again? - hukkfinn 20:37:44 08/14/05 (3)
