In this case, my point is....

...that reissues of analog recordings can only sound as good as the master you're using. The sound of the original analog tapes always deteriorate with time. In some cases, the quality of the master tapes is so bad, that they have to make a new master tape using the original vinyl record! In the re-mastering process, engineers add EQ, noise reduction, limiting and other things that can make the end product more listenable. But there is no way of regaining the lost fidelity on the old tapes. The end result is totally dependent on the mastering engineer. He has to "imagine" what it would have sounded like at the time when the record was made.

But, when you think of that the old original vinyl records were cut back when the master tapes were newly recorded and in good shape, those vinyls have a good reason to sound better and "truer". In some cases though, I find the CD remasters to be an improvement over the originals. People screwed up in the old days, too ;-)

Cheers,

/Peter
