Re: Correct, but...

A waveform of 20kHz that looks different than a perfect sinewave, for example a square wave, the additional information is only overtones above the sampling frequency. In the case with a 44.1kHz system, it will store the fundamental only, which is a sine wave of the same frequency. There has to be a low pass filter, of course. The filter in a 16/44 system is a 96th order LP filter, which cuts the signal by -60dB between 20 kHz and 22.050kHz (if I remember correctly).

Remember, the sampling frequency must be STRICTLY larger than twice the maximum frequency that you wish to store. Otherwise, there will be problems when the waveform is reconstructed. When talking about frequencies in general, we are assuming singular frequencies, free of overtones, in other words sine waves.
