Re: Why do these motors improve the sound? (Do they?)

They are drop-in (well, almost) replacements for AC motors. Typical AC motors vibrate as much as a sex toy on steroids. In tables like the Dunlop, Thorens 125 and their like some of that vibration finds its way through to the stylus (though not nearly as much as one would think) which can "muddy" the sound. It can also add a bit of bass emphasis that some like. These observations are easily confirmed by a good stethescope.

The DC motor vibrates much less but the DC motor cannot depend on AC to derive its speed clocking and the motor speed requires constant monitoring. Hence the speed control boxes on the Origin Live Units.

I have made the mod for numbers of people with the vast majority liking the change. One person thought the sound was too "refined" and asked me to change the table back to its original cofiguration.. That person was devoted to harder rock. Classical lovers were the most enthusiastic.

There is an end note. The most dramatic change occurs in a suspended table where the suspension is out of adjustment and more of the vibration wends through to the stylus than normal. And the change on even well adjusted tables is measurable. However, even the Galibier/Redoint or the Teres DC motors (battery powered) which I prefer to the Origin Live, will not improve the sound as much as a good seperate flywheel.
