I have recently had a similar experience. I took my 1.5 out of the closet after about 10 years of non-use. (It is much older than that) The glue inside had become brittle and the top had come loose from the body, even allowing the capstan motor to shift place.
Again, Gayle was awesome. I did ship it to them, and they determined that, yea, pretty much a rebuild was in order, but the motor was still fine. No problem. They repaired and upgraded the glue inside, gave me a 2 position switch, (mine only had on/off), and added a catch tray on the bottom.
I would be embarrassed to tell you how little they charged to basically give me back a "new" machine.
Top notch service and product.
