Re: Rega Planar 25- Upgrade or not?

I have had the P25 for 2 years and recently I've upgraded to a Roksan TMS.

While I still think that P25 is a wonderful table with a good balance of virtues, the roksan kills it in every respect. With the given price differential, it should. The TMS just resolves much more inner details, and has a controlled, bold and authoritative presentation of music. Compared to TMS, I must say that the P25 has a somewhat vague and timid character.

The roksan came with its own speed controller and power supply.

On the negative side, it is not a simple setup table like the P25. The Artemiz arm is rather tricky to set up. Also, it could give you the desire to upgrade the rest of the system to its level so that you can hear the full potential of the deck. I have been able to resist this temptation for 2 months but god knows how long I can fight against the idea...

Regarding SDS, my (uninformed) opinion is that it would be a good idea for P25 (mine was about 1% faster), but you should not give it more points for using with future table unless you plan to get a VPI in the future. Most high-end tables come with their own power supply and speed controller, so there's a good chance that you'll end up selling it at a used price.

Good luck with your search!
