I'm on a low budget these days, but luckily I have been quite happy with a Denon DL-300 (NOS) and DL-301 mkII (I recommend this one).
I was using a Benz Micro Wood SL for a couple almost two years, which was an expensive purchase for me (most expensive single piece of HiFi gear I have bought), but I damaged it, so until I am back in the money, it is Denon cartridges for me.
I like a LOMC cartridge for classical, especially orchestral (20th century!), but I almost prefer a good MM for studio jazz and rock (although MC is nice for live recordings).
I am very happy with my phonostage, a K & K Basic SUT into a Zero Zone clone of the EAR 834 tube phono preamp (best bargain in audio right now!). I was worried about matching the SUT to the Denon 300, but the gain matched, and either I got lucky, or rough gain matching is all there is to it.
