It may not only have been caused by mistracking but a damaged stylus will cause similar (or worse) damage. Unfortunately most "civilians" rarely know how long it is likely that a stylus will last and may continue to use them until they virtually disintegrate. As mass market consumer grade record players of the past often didn't come with facilities to allow for proper setting up and were without "sophisticated" refinements like bias correction one often finds such damage predominately relating to one or other of the channels.
