Yes it's harmless to try S2:2 or S2:1 by themselves. If you feel there is too much gain now, you might like it that way. Trying either by themselves will result in lower gain than what you have now and the only risk is might be too quiet. I think your circuit analysis sounds close if I have understood what you said.
