Half Speed playback DIY?

I need to verify my platter's rotational speed. Which prompted a thought.

Playing the HIFI News test disk demonstrated some mistracking on the +16db and +18db anti-skate bands (last 2 bands on side 1). A small increase in tracking force along with adjustment of anti-skate helped, but still a little buzzing here and there on the +18db test tone torture track.

So, I had an idea. I own a variac. The MMF7 motor is an AC motor (project 9 motor).

Suppose I used the variac to decrease the voltage to the motor so that the platter rotated at 1/2 speed. Then in digital post processing I would compensate.

Would playback at 1/2 speed significantly improve the tracking of my TT/Cartridge system? Seems like it should?
