right, I am experimenting with recording level now with the MR-1. Regarding headroom, agreed it is super important. Using battery power for the MR-1, at 0db gain and setting inputs to mic level for the signal directly from the cartridge so no RIAA EQ, I can detect zero noise during playback. I could go to negative gain to be more certain there is less risk of clipping during post processing, I will try that.
Officially the MR-1 mic inputs are 10K ohms impedance, however I have read they are closer to 100K and my assumption is that anything 45K or more should be great for my Grado.
I am using audiogate to auto apply RIAA EQ to the DSD files and it supports some other editing DSD editing functions.
It has level display on playback so I should be able to detect if there is ever clipping after processing.
I may try some additional phono preamps even if only to be able to A/B vs. the MR-1 mic level inputs.
