For me digital eq is probably too much of a pain to achieve good quality consistently unless for purposes of archiving.
Digital just isn't convenient since you have to calibrate each album perfectly or risk hitting the problems of crossing the dynamic range limits. The last thing you want to do is clip the adc. That means even ticks and pops need to below full scale. Though at the other end of the scale, if you set gain too low, there just isn't enough high frequency signal to work with to avoid running up against the digital quantization noise/distortion problems that comes with decoding the high frequencies in the digital domain.
ADC's need a few more bits to work with before it is convenient enough for me to want to try it when I am just listening for fun.
