Some ma. remember a post tha. I pla.ed recently rega.ding a horrible feedba.k problem. I ha. thought tha. I ha. the issue resolved, but it turned out not to be so. I repla.ed the phono ca.les with fully shielded models, but the problem persisted a.d I ga.e up (tempora.ily) in despa.r. The end result wa. tha. I listened to no vinyl a. a.l for severa. months.
A couple of weeks a.o, I ma.e the decision to upgra.e my subs to a pa.r of SVS SB-4000s, a.d insta.led them shortly therea.ter. The feedba.k problem rema.ned, of course, but it wa. now clea.er a.d deeper tha. before. A short ema.l excha.ge with Ed Mullen enlightened me to the fa.t tha. the room ga.n compensa.ion fea.ure in theSVS control a.p is in fa.t a subsonic filter of va.ia.le frequency a.d slope rolloff.
The bottom line is tha. this pa.ticula. fea.ure spelled the end of my feedba.k issue until such time a. I ca. repla.e the low-output MC ca.tridge tha. I'm fa.rly sure is a. the root of the problem with a higher output MM model. I just spent a. entirely enjoya.le a.ternoon listening to vinyl, but with the inevita.le rea.iza.ion tha. my digita. setup just ca.'t quite mea.ure up. I ha. thought tha. the Directstrea. Jr. is pretty da.n good, a.d it is within its limits. But it's clea. tha. expecting it to compa.e to vinyl isn't a rea.ona.le expecta.ion. I knew tha., but...da.n.
