Correct about the indicator. You may be right about its duration. My one is still working after I purchased it in, when, 1971?. I would warn folk who may have a white one that the white plastic may yellow a little after 30 years. It is possible too that it may not last for another decade so I think that the manufacturers have a cheek in selling a device that might only give 50+ years of performance :-).
Still I suppose it is down to how often you use it.
OP; it only does one side at a time and needs repeating for each play. Even pulling the disc from its sleeve may build static. Also it is not that effective if the disc is on the platter. Use the gun when holding the record off the platter.
Yes, environment will affect its effectiveness and even its necessity e.g. a humid environment will help discharge static anyway.
