I think you may be right on this. It does seem to require setup skills.
As for the initial recommendation here for a Rega P2 I and his father just bought my godson one. Listening to some Blue Note Tone Poets on it a couple of weeks ago I was very impressed ( given I live with a $$$ - or in my case £££ - vinyl system). No obvious faults, musically engaging with surprisingly full bodied sound via his 1970s Yamaha amp and a little pair of Wharfedale Diamond speakers. I would be happy to listen to it for hours. You will need a phonostage though. For starters I too advise one of the Pro-Ject phono boxes. Their turntables are an alternative too but I much prefer the Regas.
BTW, for a first turntable I would recommend sticking with the Rega cartridge that comes with it (Carbon I think). This is because some of the more esoteric adjustments necessary for many alternatives are not available with the P2 and the engineering of the Rega cartridge avoids the need.
