He also is said to have said out loud to himself on one occasion during a recording session, at a point where he was unhappy with his performance, "Drink, drink, drink. Smoke, smoke, smoke. Shmuck, shmuck, shmuck."

At some point in the 60s, I think, he was hospitalized for polyps on his vocal cords, which forced him to stop performing for at least a year or two.
