What's Abby Normal about it?

To me it looks like a very early SOTA, perhaps the kit version which my friend bought and assembled. Funny story: he connected the feedback circuit so it apparently gave positive rather than negative feedback to the motor control. So, when he first turned it on (I was present), the platter just kept gaining speed, to the point where I actually thought it was going to levitate and fly across the room, whereupon I ducked under the table. He cut the power and we laughed for about 10 minutes. This must have been late 1980s or so.
