You would be putting more pressure on one side of the main bearing, as well as uneven pressure on the tonearm bearing. Which, may, or may not, be an issue both as applied to sound quality and to wear.
Funny that this has come up. This weekend I am picking up a Stanton STR-8 DJ turntable with an underhung tonearm and no offset. With no offset, you don't need anti skate, of course, but the stylus can't really read the groove correctly either. Both cases of solving one problem and creating even greater ones.
Once I rehab it, then I will give it to some wanna be DJ kid as it is unsuitable for playing LPs. But for scratching....ahhhhh............
