RE: Best MM (or equivalent moving iron, etc.)...

If you need a backup reference, it doesn't get much easier to use than those modded Ortofon DJ carts KAB sells. I picked up a Concorde Pro S at guitar center and Kevin sold me a Sty-30. Not too bad. super easy

One question about the hum is whether it is mostly getting in one way or are there more than one problems that are adding up.

You're going to get some amount of inductive pickup, directly in the signal path in the cart ,interconnects, and electronics but you can troubleshoot by bypassing/replacing components in the chain with a short on the inputs of the downstream component to verify whether significant hum gets removed in each case. At least that way you can narrow down where to focus your energy fixing stuff.

But there are the alternate sneak paths to consider....high gain analog gear might be more susceptible to the kind of emi , including utility frequency, from the compromises that seem more likely to be a problem , for example, with less than ideal implementation of safety grounding in complex multi component single ended audio systems. If you have an line level analog coming into an input from a internal pc sound card RCA output in a pc on extension cord to the back room, for example, start there.
