I had a long talk with Dave Slagle on this question of impedance matching between cartridge and inputs of a current-drive phono. I hope he will comment, but it seems that if there is enough excess gain to burn, then the mismatch (internal resistance of cartridge > or = input impedance of phono state), there isn't much problem. As you know, most manufacturers do recommend not to go above a certain cartridge internal resistance when driving their particular product. I guess it could be different for different devices, but AFAIK most recommend internal resistance <10 or <20 ohms. But the proof is in the pudding.
