As a class, MC cartridges tend to be low in compliance with some rare exceptions. So you almost can't go wrong, especially if you check the specs and see a number for compliance that is 10 or less. But be aware that in the specification sheet and in our conversations, most of the time we are talking about vertical compliance. Your set up expert may have been referring to lateral compliance, when he suggested using a low compliance cartridge with a straight line air bearing tone arm. This is because, if you think about it, as the cartridge moves across the LP in a straight line, there is stress in the horizontal plane on the cantilever assembly. Therefore, lateral compliance is an issue. This is especially true because straight line tone arms tend to have very high effective mass in the horizontal plane. High effective mass tone arms go best with low cartridge compliance, whether we are talking about the vertical or the horizontal plane.
