The 1042 is a great cartridge and has been around for ages, for that reason. Not least, as AN UK use it as a basis for their modifications. Try it again in a much better system than you did. It has an very lucid and cogent sound that needs a quality environment to hear it at its most capable.
The Alnico magnet substitutions will likely have a great effect. The stiff cantilever assembly will likely contribute to emulating the house sound of the IO, in conjunction with the Alnico. In other words, it has been specifically voiced.
