It sounds like you solved your dilemmea with it. Also there are MANY tested and proven stylus cleaners on the market, so one should not have to resort to something like Blue-Tak or watchmakers putty. Try some Oznow. It is not cheap, but a one-time investment should last a lifetime. Also there are liquid cleaners like Mo-Fi LP9 or Stylast cleaner instead of the Stylast. Any of these should be fine and theoretically safer that trying to go the DIY route. Believe me I am all for DIY and cost-cutting tweaks in the audio world, but NOT when it comes to stylus care.
