I many ways the AR turntable was the Dynaco Stereo 70 of turntables. It was a cost effective device that got thousands into good audio and then influenced tons of other designs.
The arm was probably not as bad as its reputation. Part of the problem was the built in damping of lowering the arm. It didn't take much record warp to activate it during playing. But it could be disabled. There was a pin sticking out of the inside of the pivot area. Pull it out with pliers and no more damping. I used the arm with both the ADC Point 4E and Decca $RC pickups, very different pickups, with no problems.
