RE: Design of original AR-XA evaluated

I bought one in 1970-71, too. The price was under $100, which even then was dirt cheap, and it offered "performance" that seemed good at the time, because there were no generally accepted criteria for turntable performance. It was quiet enough and speed stable enough not to be obtrusive in the listening experience. It was and is a "classic", because for many of us it served as a gateway to later obsessions with audio per se as a hobby. These days, I think it is overly glorified, just as the $50,000+ behemoth turntables are also overly glorified. When I moved on from the AR-XA, I don't recall ever feeling nostalgic about it or wanting to return to it. Whatever I bought after that seemed to be a bit better, and so on.
